How Should a Golf Polo Fit? A No-Nonsense Guide for Men

How Should a Golf Polo Fit? A no-nonsense guide for men. Doubtless Editorial

There are two kinds of badly fitting golf shirts. There's the one that looks like it was borrowed from an older, larger brother, and the one so tight it's basically a compression sleeve with a collar. Neither one is helping your handicap, and neither one is getting you compliments at dinner.

The short answer

A golf polo should sit right at the edge of your shoulders, skim your chest and stomach without pulling or ballooning, have sleeves that end around mid-bicep, and be long enough to stay tucked through a full swing. You should be able to turn and reach without the fabric tugging across your back.

Getting the fit right is the cheapest way to look better on the course. Same shirt, same price, completely different result. Here's how to check it in about thirty seconds in front of a mirror.

1. Shoulders: start here

The shoulder seam should land right at the edge of your shoulder bone. Too far in and the shirt pulls when you swing. Too far down your arm and the whole shirt looks a size too big, because it is.

Shoulders are the hardest thing for a tailor to fix, so if a polo fits everywhere except the shoulders, it's the wrong size.

2. Chest and body: skim, don't squeeze

You want the fabric to follow your shape without clinging to it. A good test: pinch the fabric at the side of your chest. About an inch to two inches of extra fabric is the sweet spot for a classic fit. Much more and it'll billow in the wind. Less and every button is under stress.

If the placket buttons pull into little horizontal creases, size up.

3. Sleeves: the mid-bicep rule

Polo sleeves should end around the middle of your bicep, and the opening should sit close to your arm without gripping it. Sleeves that hang to your elbow make anyone look smaller. Sleeves that cut off circulation make anyone look like they're trying too hard.

4. Length: the tuck test

Most courses expect your shirt tucked in (our golf dress code guide explains why). So your polo needs enough length to stay put when you rotate through a full swing. Tuck it in, take a few practice swings in the mirror, and see what happens. If it pops out by your third rep, it's too short.

Planning to wear it untucked off the course? The hem should hit around the middle of your zipper. Anything lower starts looking like a dress. (Wearing it to the office? Here's how to wear a golf polo to work.)

If you're thinking about your shirt during your swing, it doesn't fit.

5. The swing test

This one's the real exam. Put the polo on and go through a slow, full backswing and follow-through. Then reach both arms overhead like you're celebrating a long putt (practice now so you're ready).

  • Fabric pulling tight across your upper back? Size up or find more stretch.
  • Shirt riding way up at the waist? Too short.
  • Barely notice you're wearing it? That's the one.

This is where fabric matters as much as size. A stretch performance polo moves with you, while stiff cotton fights you. (We get into that in Golf Polo vs. Regular Polo.)

The swing test, passed: a full turn in the Greenbriar with nothing pulling across the back.

Classic fit vs. slim fit

Classic fit Slim fit
Chest & body Comfortable room, clean line Close to the body
Best for Most builds, all-day wear, on and off the course Lean builds who like a tight look
Swing comfort Easy Depends heavily on stretch

Every one of our printed golf polos for men is cut in a classic fit with stretch fabric. It's tailored enough to look sharp at dinner and relaxed enough that you're never thinking about it on the course. It's the fit that works for the most guys, most of the time.
