Golf Polo vs. Regular Polo: What's Actually the Difference?

Golf Polo vs. Regular Polo: what actually sets them apart. Doubtless Editorial

From ten feet away, a golf polo and a regular polo look like twins. Same collar, same buttons, same general vibe. Then you wear the regular one for 18 holes in July and discover the difference the hard way, somewhere around the 14th tee, when your shirt weighs about four pounds.

The short answer

A golf polo is made from lightweight performance fabric, usually stretch polyester, that wicks sweat, dries fast, blocks UV and moves with your swing. A regular polo is usually cotton pique, which is soft but absorbs sweat, holds moisture, wrinkles easily and has little stretch. Golf polos are built for performance; regular polos are built for lounging.

That doesn't mean your cotton polo is useless. It just has a different job. Here's how the two actually compare, and when each one makes sense.

1. Fabric: the difference that matters most

Regular polos are traditionally made from cotton pique, the textured, waffle-like knit you know from the classic tennis-club look. Cotton feels great when you're standing still. The problem is that it loves water. It soaks up sweat, holds onto it, and takes its sweet time drying.

Golf polos use performance fabrics, most often polyester blended with a bit of stretch. Polyester doesn't absorb water the way cotton does. Instead, it pulls moisture to the surface where it can evaporate. That's what "moisture-wicking" actually means, and it's the reason you can play a full round and still look like you just arrived.

2. Stretch and movement

A golf swing is a full-body rotation. Your shoulders turn, your arms extend, and your shirt either comes along for the ride or fights you the whole way. Cotton pique has very little give. Performance fabric with stretch moves with your backswing instead of pulling across your shoulders.

You may not notice it on one swing. You'll notice it on swing number ninety.

3. Sun protection

You're outside for four-plus hours, usually in the middle of the day. Many golf polos are made with fabric rated for UV protection, which gives you an extra layer of defense across your shoulders and back. A thin, sweaty cotton shirt does a lot less. It's not a replacement for sunscreen, but it helps. (More on staying cool in our guide to the best golf shirts for hot weather.)

4. Wrinkles and travel

Cotton polos wrinkle if you look at them wrong. Performance polos are generally wrinkle-resistant, which matters more than you'd think when your shirt has been rolled up in a golf bag, a carry-on or the back seat of a car.

A regular polo is for the patio. A golf polo is for the patio, the course, and everything in between.

Can you wear a golf polo off the course?

Absolutely, and this is where the right one really earns its spot in your closet. The old knock on golf shirts was that they looked like golf shirts: shiny fabric, loud logos, a fit that only made sense next to a cart.

You shouldn't need a second shirt for dinner. That's why every Doubtless polo pairs performance fabric with an original print and a clean, classic fit, so it looks just as right at dinner, on a trip or at a weekend cookout as it does on the first tee. One shirt, the whole day. Here's how to wear a golf polo to work, too.

Can you wear a regular polo to play golf?

At most courses, yes. A cotton polo has a collar, so it meets the typical dress code. (Not sure what else you need? Here's our full guide on what to wear golfing.) It just won't feel as good by the end of the round, especially in heat and humidity. If you play more than a few times a year, a couple of real golf polos are worth it.

What to look for when you buy a golf polo

  • Moisture-wicking, quick-dry fabric. Non-negotiable.
  • Some stretch. Your shoulders will notice.
  • UV protection for long days outside.
  • A fit that works off the course too. Not too boxy, not shrink-wrapped. Our golf polo fit guide covers exactly how it should sit.
  • A design you actually like. You'll wear it more if it has some character.

Every one of our printed golf polos for men is lightweight stretch polyester that's moisture-wicking, quick-dry, UV protective and wrinkle-resistant, in sizes S to 2XL. Unworn polos with tags can be returned within 30 days.
